Hello Olivia!! I really enjoyed your thorough presentation and feel that you highlighted important details and characteristics in the photographs that helped support your conclusions. The constant movement of the photographs was a little distracting, but that would be my only real criticism. Emphasizing Hine's focus on child laborers and his intent to create a one-sided narrative regarding a widespread social issue certainly shows your understanding of ethically evaluative photography as discussed in Chapter 4. After each image, you made sure to connect the small details to the larger messages of the photographs and how they speak to an even larger cause. The tattered clothing, dirt, frail children, and as you mentioned, "intimidating machinery" made me feel a great deal of fear and empathy for these children. In particular, the photograph of Addie Card was the most impactful to me because she looks so young, yet simultaneously so aged given the context in which the image was taken. Learning about Lewis Hine's use of ethically evaluative photos further emphasized to me that the backgrounds and clothing in which images are taken can contribute significantly to the overall message behind the photo. In my future work, I will certainly pay more meticulous attention to the specific placement and appearance of impactful details when attempting to convey an ethically evaluative message. Thanks for sharing!!
