Dozen Photo Challenge

My Best Image

I feel that the black and white photo of my dog, Carson, is my most successful image for this assignment. When initially taking photos of Carson, I was not planning on using him as the subject for my black and white requirement. As I was editing my pictures, I noted the individual detail of Carson's fur and whiskers. Recalling our lecture material, I knew that subjects with texture and shadow produce the best black and white photos. I decided that this particular image of my dog would be the chosen one, and reduced the saturation until I was satisfied with the black and white result. I was astonished at how the fur I thought stood out on its own in color, created a more stark contrast when in black and white. I especially like how the whiskers on the left side of the image appear as white in front of the dark cabinet, whereas the whiskers on the right appear dark in front of the light fur. The highlight and shadows on Carson's nose give the two-dimensional photo a three-dimensional feel.

The most challenging part of this assignment was getting started. As a beginner in photography, learning how to move around my subjects to snap a photo in/with the most ideal conditions was difficult. When I went to put my knowledge into practice, I found myself intimidated by the various circumstances necessary to produce a focused photograph and apprehensive to be creative. However, I found that the more pictures I took the more comfortable I became with my surroundings and my camera. I tried to focus on one element at a time, rather than trying to fit multiple elements in one photograph. I would like to one day be able to easily identify and capture multiple elements as I see them, rather than having to concentrate on a specific element.

Moving forward, I would like to try using a tripod to capture more still, in-focus images. This challenge allowed me to recognize that I am a very shaky person. In addition, many of the photos that I thought would be in focus, simply were not. I feel that adding a tripod to my photography skill set would allow me to take stable images and concentrate on perfecting the focus for my shots. I would also like to learn how to edit my images more effectively and with more thought. I am very unfamiliar with photo editing software, but am trying to familiarize myself the more I utilize it!

Comment On A Classmate's Work

Hey Sabrina!! This photo is super cool!!! The various shades of blue from the ocean to the sky, to the detail on your blanket really drew me into this picture. The peaceful blues make the vibrant magenta pop, which is a perfect place for you, the subject, to pose!! The fact that you are doing yoga in the photo emphasizes the tranquil vibes as well. The angle at which the photo was taken, creates a stark dividing line between the ground and the ocean. This, in combination with the skyline, break the photo up horizontally by the Rule of Thirds which allows for you, the subject, to stand out amongst the background. The detailed shadows on your forearms and ankle give your photo a very 3D look. I honestly don't know if I would do much different to this photo because I feel the simplicity adds to the peaceful feeling.
