Descriptive

This real estate photo is an example of descriptive photography because the sole purpose of the image is to depict the interior of the home to potential buyers, and nothing more. There is no hidden meaning or underlying message, simply just the layout of the home.

Explanatory

This sequence photo by Marcio Abe is an example of explanatory photography because it causes viewers to ask questions such as "where was this?" while answering "what was happening?". The various shots depicting the motions of a snowboarding trick explain what changes were made over time.

Interpretive

I would consider this image of mine to be interpretive because the staging of my subject looking through the binoculars allows for the viewer to create their own conclusions about the image. Explanatory claims (where, when) are present as well, yet the lack of clear answers in the photo allows for individual interpretation.

Ethically Evaluative

Titled Two People Reclining On A Couch, the men in this photo lay sprawled on top of one another while gazing illusively into the camera. This photograph, taken by Alice Austen, is ethically evaluative because it challenges the gender roles of men in 1895.

Aesthetically Evaluative

I took this aesthetically evaluative photo after creating a rock bridge. The monochromatic colors occupying the majority of the frame in combination with the reflection of light on the water highlight the green bank, and the jagged shape of the rather red rocks.

Theoretical

This image of mine represents theoretical photography because it challenges the science of art. After taking the photo, I rotated it 180 degrees which caused the reflection of the trees on the water to flip and my feet to appear at the edge of a cliff. The water now serves as the sky, and the sky serves as the water.
