I feel that my image (pictured left) best emulates Ansel Adams's image (pictured right) because of the textural, lighting, and composition. I attempted to emulate the small, roughly textured trees and blank patches that make up the background of Adams's photograph with the mudded, twigged shoreline, rippled ocean, and wispy sky. These textures, in both my photograph and Adams', provide a detailed background for the shadowed subjects placed in the center of the photos. Furthermore, the lighting is rather similar in both pieces; the sun was directly above the subjects placing them fully in their shadows, creating silhouettes, while the rest of the image is rather congruent with softer light. The most challenging part of this assignment was figuring out how to emulate photographic elements rather than attempting to re-create the content of the original artist's photo. I had to push myself to be creative and isolate the techniques utilized by Adams and then implement them in my own photo. This reemphasized the importance of taking photos from multiple angles to capture a shot that included lighting and composition to produce the best final image when edited. I feel that moving forward I will now be able to intentionally take color pictures that will turn out well in black and white, whereas I previously felt as though I was aimlessly editing photos originally in color.

Hello Ally! I really like the way that your image came out, it totally gives off an eerie feel similar to that of Mann's photo. The foggy look you referenced certainly adds to the spooky vibe, yet I am intrigued by the additional sharp focus in your image. You mentioned repetition and symmetry and truly did capture the vertical patterned lines created by the trees. I like how your trees are thicker towards the outsides, and thinner towards the middle of the photo whereas Mann's are thick in the middle and thin on the outskirts. I also had a hard time trying not to create exact replicas of images, but I feel that you truly put your own creative spin on yours! Thanks for sharing!
