Critiquing Photography

My Best Photo

I feel that my theoretical photography example was the most successful image because I was able to edit the photo to be more artistic than it initially was. The photo was intriguing on its own, but once I rotated it 180 degrees and increased the saturation, highlights, & contrast of the photo more of an artistic story began to unfold. In the original, I am sitting on a rock looking out on the water as the trees near the bank reflect onto it. A peaceful, tranquil image in itself, but I felt that there was not enough sustenance to classify it as a theoretical image over an aesthetically evaluative photo. Once rotated and edited, I noted that the tree's reflection on the water in contrast with my feet (now at the top of the image) created the illusion of an impossible reality that really challenges the viewer to question how the photo was taken, and what exactly is being depicted.

The most challenging aspect of this assignment was creating art in photographs that were not outright artistic. I recalled how the lecture described a photograph as being more than what is simply captured in a single frame. This challenged me to revisit photographs from shooting sessions that I had previously decided were "not good enough" to use for this assignment. I really tested my creativity and tried to provide meaning to otherwise arbitrary images.

Moving forward I will continue to capture images of a subject from various angles in an attempt to capture the best possible photo given the circumstances. This project also really helped me to take note of the backgrounds of my photos and how shifting from side to side, up and down can completely change the outcome of an image. I will also continue to further explore the ways in which a photo can be edited and be more adventurous/take risks with the ways my photos are altered.

Comment On A Classmates Work

Hey Adriana! This photo is certainly interpretive and absolutely astounding. The expression on the child's face and the fact that they are not looking directly into the camera cause the viewer to ponder what the child is contemplating at that very moment. As you stated, the warm colors help to tie the whole photograph together and connect the house in the background to the child in the foreground. A very intriguing photo and great analysis, thanks for sharing!
